Getting from JFK to NYC : Budget friendly and easy to navigate!

Published on 25 February 2026 at 22:35

Good news, you can get to NYC for under $15 using the Airtrain and Subway. It's safe and runs 24/7. Here's exactly how to do it.

How much does it cost?

Here's the breakdown.

  • AirTrain: $8.50
  • Subway: $2.90
  • Total: $11.40

But, what do I do?

I promise you, a 5 year old is capable of making this journey. Don't be intimidated. Check where your hotel is in regards to Manhattan, commit it to memory. Are you uptown, downtown? Your phone's maps should tell you the stop to get off. We got off at 7th Ave for Upper West Side and switched subways.

  • Follow YELLOW ground transportation signs in JFK until you reach a little monorail waiting area. Board the train toward Jamaica.
  • Once you arrive in Jamaice, deboard and follow signs for the Subway E. (There is also an option to use the LIRR (Long Island Rail Road)).
  • Tap your phone or card to enter the Subway.
  • Get off at your stop.

Subway E?! What does that mean?

The subway routes in New York City are named after letters or in some cases numbers. The E is the handiest for getting to Manhattan from JFK.

To summarise it's main stops for tourists:

  • Lexington Av/53 Street - Good for east midtown
  • 5 Ave/ 53 Street - Near Rockerfeller
  • 7 Ave - Near central park south (swithc to move to upper west side)
  • 50 Street - Theatre District
  • 42 St - Port authority - Times Square
  • 34 St - Penn Station - Madison Square Garden
  • Canal Street - China Town
  • WTC - World trade centre/financial district.

Not in these areas?

You can either swithc trains at a closer stop, or check the LIRR for another route. The LIRR will go via Grand Central.

How Much Does It Cost to Go from JFK to Manhattan?

Here’s the breakdown:

  • AirTrain: $8.50

  • Subway: $2.90

  • Total: $11.40

That’s it.

Now compare this to

  • Taxi: ~$70 flat fare (plus toll + tip)

  • Uber/Lyft: $65–$120 depending on time

If you're traveling solo or as a couple, public transport wins every time in my opinion.

Step-by-Step: JFK AirTrain to Subway

You’ll use two systems:

  • AirTrain JFK

  • New York City Subway

Here’s the simple version.

Step 1: Follow Signs for AirTrain

After baggage claim, follow the yellow AirTrain signs.

You don’t go outside.

AirTrain is free inside the airport. But you will be leaving the airport and going to Jamaica. For this reason, keep your belongings on you and safe!

Step 2: Get Off at Jamaica Station

Stay on until Jamaica Station.

This is where you exit and pay the $8.50 AirTrain fee.

You can tap your phone or card and use contactless payment.

Step 3: Transfer to the Subway

From Jamaica Station:

Take the E train toward Manhattan.

This train runs through:

  • Midtown

  • Penn Station

  • Times Square area (short walk from 7th Ave stop)

If you're heading downtown, the E still works great. For a couple dollars more you can get the LIRR (Long Island Rail Road) which is also 24/7 and services Grand Central Station and Penn Station.

Step 4: Arrive in Manhattan

Total travel time:
70–90 minutes, depending on destination and wait times.

If you land later at night I would add a little bit of time on to this as frequency may differ.

Still cheaper than traffic in a taxi.

JFK to Times Square by Subway

How do you get straight to the hustle and bustle?

AirTrain → Jamaica Station → E train → Get off at 42 St–Port Authority.

Walk 5 minutes and you’re in Times Square.

Cost: $11.40
Time: ~75 minutes

Is the AirTrain + Subway Safe?

Yes.

It is used by thousands of people daily, but always keep your wits about you.

Basic travel common sense applies:

  • Keep luggage close

  • Don’t flash valuables

  • Stay near other passengers late at night

If you land at 2am and feel unsure, the train still runs 24/7 — just expect fewer people.

AirTrain vs Taxi vs Uber from JFK

If you’re 3–4 people splitting fare, taxi might make sense.

Solo traveler? Public transport saves you a lot of money.

Does the AirTrain Run 24 Hours?

Yes.

AirTrain runs 24/7.

The subway also runs 24/7 — though late night service may be slower.

Can You Use a MetroCard on the AirTrain?

Yes.

You pay the AirTrain fee at Jamaica Station.

You can use:

  • MetroCard

  • Contactless tap (OMNY)

  • Credit/debit card

Subway fare is separate unless using contactless.

Final Thoughts: Is It Worth It?

If you're trying to travel NYC on a budget, this is the only way I will travel to the city. I don't enjoy wasting money when there is a perfectly safe and comfortable cheaper option available.

You save $80+ instantly.

And honestly? If you kick your NYC trip off with the subway, you've gotten the trepidation out of your system and you're well able to use it for the rest of your trip.

Unless you're exhausted, traveling with small kids, or carrying five giant suitcases — AirTrain + subway is the smartest budget option from JFK.
